MASH Certified Sober Homes

MASH’s recovery values emphasize health, home, purpose, and community. Successful sober homes establish and reinforce healthy lifestyles, provide a safe and stable place to live, conduct meaningful activities, and build relationships and social networks for support. Through our network of mash sober housing certified sober housing and empirically-based recovery principles, MASH’s goal is to help create and foster these safe living environments for those with substance use disorders. Massachusetts offers many sober living homes and recovery residences for those in recovery from addiction.

The scholarship is a valuable resource for those in recovery who may face financial barriers in accessing safe and supportive living environments as they continue on their journey toward sustained sobriety. The sober housing was scheduled to expire at the end of August. However, the grant secured by the Massachusetts Parole Board, will open up approximately 360 beds for probationers and individuals leaving prison or other facilities and are re-entering society. Main components of Project NORTH include voluntary court-based Recovery Support Navigation, transportation to court and court-mandated treatment, and rent for up to six months in a certified sober home.

In Massachusetts, sober homes and recovery residences are different models for substance abuse recovery. Recovery residences —formerly known as halfway houses — are licensed residential treatment programs, while Massachusetts sober homes are peer-led and do not provide treatment. Sober homes provide mutual support, emphasize independent living skills, and depend on peer leadership. Our homes and their atmospheres are nurtured by the guests they provide for. The Massachusetts Alliance for Sober Housing, or MASH, exists to support men and women in recovery from addiction by improving access to quality sober houses through establishing recovery home standards and support services. Residents of sober homes are expected to abstain from alcohol and drug use, other than prescribed medications, and to refrain from prescription misuse.

This organization is required to file an IRS Form 990 or 990-EZ. Amenities include on site laundry, air conditioning, parking, full kitchens, living/dining rooms and quick access to public transportation. Each guest can expect a clean bed, sufficient clothing storage, HDTV w/ cable and free wifi in every room inside a clean, well maintained home cared for by the guests who stay there! Our homes are smoke free but there are plenty of designated outdoor smoking areas. After a referral is received, our Housing Coordinator will reach out to the individual to schedule an intake appointment.

It’s worth keeping an eye on this agency to see if they’ll make a similar move in the future. Beware NIMBY resistance to sober living homes in Massachusetts. In Methuen, a husband-wife team was harassed by the city with several lengthy requests for code-related information and inspections. This is not usual in Massachusetts, where the broader community is skeptical about recovery housing.

MASH-certified sober homes must also offer a peer-based environment and be drug- and alcohol-free. Certified sober homes in Massachusetts are designated by the Massachusetts Alliance for Sober Housing (MASH). Legislation in 2014 created voluntary certification of Massachusetts sober houses, and MASH began managing voluntary statewide sober home certification in 2016.
